Recovery after Optic Nerve Fenestration in Fulminant Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension

Abstract

|
Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is characterized by headache and visual loss due to increased intracranial pressure with unknown cause. Some patients have a more malignant form of disease with rapid worsening of visual loss over days. We report a case of 31-year-old obese female (BMI 63) who presented with progressive headache and blurred vision for several weeks. She was managed with prompt surgical interventions. In patients with fulminant IIH, surgery such as cerebrospinal fluid shunting, venous sinus stenting, and optic nerve sheath fenestration should not be delayed to preserve visual acuity and field.
